Come and learn to build better!
Apprentices will learn about passive solar theory and application, structural techniques, how to use tools/fasteners/building materials, building by hand, and so much more. The project that you will be working on the Taos Affordable Homeownership Pilot Project, which are passive solar homes. Please visit the TAHP page on our website for more details about the project.
Apprentices will work alongside Phil Basehart, who is ECOHAB’s executive director, foreman of all building projects, and who has over 30 years of experience in alternative construction and design. When apprentices arrive, you will be joining Phil and the crew wherever they are at in the current phase of construction. This may include house layout, laying block, framing, insulating, finish metal work, plastering, etc. It is projected that the TAHP homes will be built within six months from the construction’s start date. Therefore, a six-month apprenticeship could include a start-to-finish experience.
LOCATION: Taos, New Mexico
Duration: 2-6 months open enrollment
Pay: Determined by experience, minimum $17/hr
Hours: Full-time REQUIRED, 8:30am - 4:30pm M-F
HOUSING & TRANSPORTATION
Transportation: Having your own car is NECESSARY in Taos.
Housing: ECOHAB has a housing connection available for $750/month with a 3 month minimum commitment. This is not a requirement. You are free to find your own housing.

Power drill/driver + assorted bits (philips + t-25)
Utility knife + replacement blades
Hammer (both finishing + framing)
Measuring tape
Pencils
Work gloves
Personal Protection Equipment
Not required immediately (but potentially you may need)
Mallet (white, not black)
Plastering trowels (pool trowel, margin trowel)
Hawk (for plastering, not a bird)
Speed square
Levels (16” or other assorted sizes)
