Why ECOHAB is returning to Comalapa, Guatemala to build more classrooms:

ECOHAB, in partnership with nonprofits Long Way Home and Team Up, is building a sustainable classroom in a rural Maya Kaqchikel village, near San Juan Comalapa, to address severe shortages of educational infrastructure. This classroom design is adapted to the local climate and includes rainwater harvesting, solar-powered electricity, temperature control, and more.

This community of mainly Indigenous Kaqchikel, families faces high rates of poverty, low literacy, limited school completion (especially for girls), and lack of clean water or sanitation. Only a small fraction of Indigenous children finish high school, and many children work agricultural fields instead of attending school full-time. Through our hands-on workshops, participants learn adaptive design construction techniques while helping build essential infrastructure that brings education, opportunity, and resilience to underserved communities.

Why You Should Join:

  • Hands-on Building Experience: ECOHAB offers a unique construction method focused on the intersection of ecology and adaptive-design. Whether you’re a seasoned builder or completely new to construction, our workshops are designed for all skill levels. You’ll gain real-world experience working alongside the ECOHAB team, local community members, and fellow volunteers. No experience necessary! We’ll provide the guidance and training you need, and everyone is welcome.

  • Cultural Immersion: This is more than just construction. You'll be fully immersed in the vibrant culture of Guatemala, meeting local residents and connecting with people from around the world. Private curated cultural tours are included, exploring where the typical tourist never goes.

  • Learn and Grow: Our workshops offer invaluable skills and knowledge revolved around environmentally conscious building that you can apply both personally and professionally. Plus, we’ll be building classrooms that will make a lasting impact on local children’s education. Travel with purpose.

  • Free Lunch, Accommodations: Enjoy 7 nights of accommodations in Comalapa and 6 lunches while you work and collaborate with the team. This is a great way to fuel up, bond with others, and stay energized for the day ahead.
